Spit Poetry is a reading series I founded in fall of 2022 with Lauren Holguin. Most of the readings take place in Upstairs Abyssinia in West Philly, though a few have been at Dahlak and Gojjo. The format is: featured readers read, and then there is a little break, during which time people can do things like get another drink, pee, buy some books from the readers, smoke one cigarette, donate to the readers, sign up for the open mic, talk to someone they don’t already know, or something else that I come up with off the top of my head to suggest before the break. Below is the full list of Spit Poetry readings. Maybe I will add some images at some point if I get up to that, but you can imagine the room is very full and there are twinkle lights behind the readers, who are reading at a mic, with green curtains behind them, while standing on a rug. Usually Spit Poetry is hosted on Sunday evenings in the middle of the month, but it’s not a law or anything.
